Like many images of descent, Psyche’s fourth task requires a solo journey into the underworld to find a gift needed for consciousness. Sacrifice is needed. Psyche must relinquish the parameters of habit, instinct, and ego to find a different point of view. And, just as Persephone must take nothing from Hades on her return to the upper world, Psyche must return Aphrodite’s beauty box to the upper world unopened. It is a daunting mission that requires cooperation between the masculine and feminine components of her nature. The subtle discernment needed for success can only come from a union of intelligence and a compassionate heart.
