Psyche is a viewpoint not an object, and love in the tale is ontological not emotional. Psyche stands between the two great poles of the feminine as presented by the Great Mother Goddess. She belongs neither to the elementary or the transformative matrix. Psyche is a mortal who experiences transformation as she moves from instinct to volition. The solution to her laborious tasks requires the development of subtle discrimination that can only occur with a union of intelligence and a compassionate heart. And Eros, love, is the instigator of the journey.
